Why Are Honeycomb Cells Hexagonal?

Bees have over time developed to build hexagonal honeycomb cells.
Why is this hexagonal shape suitable for storing honey?

Honeycombs are made from bee-wax, a substance created by workers.
When the temperature is right, the workers special wax scales from special glands in their body. Then they mix the wax with a bit of honey and pollen to produce the bee-wax. The hexagonal cells are the storage room for their honey, as well a home to raise young bees.
